It’s one of those late night calls that you were not able to pick up. You called back early in the morning thinking that it was an emergency. Unfortunately, you heard obscene moaning and realized it’s a scam. Then your phone bill arrives, and there goes an extra $100 charge.
Due to the huge amount of complaints received, police departments across Utah are warning people not to answer and not to call back numbers from the 473 area code. Apparently, some residents in the area who just picked up the phone and did not even return the call were getting a $19.95 charge on their phone bill.
This could be from a sex phone line scammer using a foreign country (Grenada) for their scam. They ring your phone and hope you get curious or upset enough to call their Grenada telephone number. That is an unregulated pay-per-minute sex line (or just a recording saying to hold interminably) that charges a tremendous fee to your phone line, plus the cost of an international call.
Dave Mindstrange reported the number 4735209714:
Got a missed call from this number 473-520-9873 this morning, decided to call them back, immediately someone answered on the other end and sounded like they were having hardcore sex. Then decided to call it from my land line, the number then states it is disconnected. Go figure, every time I call back it starts the sex over.
Since Grenada’s country code is “1”, just like the US and Canada, you would think that the number on the caller ID can be called back in the same way you call a domestic number. Thus, many people are fooled into thinking that “473” is a domestic area code — which it is not — and they call back and incur enormous charges on their phone bills. Most of these charges go right to the scammer. And you get a big surprise when you receive your phone bill.
